How to add or remove footer and header on only one page?

The solution is to separate that one page and place that page on a separate section. Then untick the Match previous section under the Headers & Footers. It works because the headers and footers of one section are totally independent. Any change in the headers and the footers of other sections doesn’t affect the current section. Check out the detailed instructions below.

01. How to remove the foot or the header on only one page in Pages?

In my example below, the three pages of the same section have the same header. Now I want to remove the header from the second page. And I do want to keep that header on the first and the third page.

The same header on 3 pages

My solution is that I create two new sections. Now I have three sections in total. And each section has one page. Because I don’t want my second page to have the header of the first page. And I don’t want to remove the header from my third page. I untick the Match previous section.

3 separate sections

If you don’t see the “Match previous section” option, the steps below will guide you.

  • Click the page in the Page Thumbnails screen
  • Click the document icon
  • Click the Section tab
  • Untick the “Match previous section” option under the “Headers & Footers”

Untick the Match previous section

Now I simply remove the content in the header of the second page, and achieve my desired goal.

The question is “Why don’t I keep the first and the third pages in the same section?”. I only need to remove the header from the second page. The problem is that I want to keep the page order the same. I cannot place the second page section in the middle of the section with the first and the third page.

If I need to remove the header or the footer from the last page of the section. Then I don’t need to separate each page into each section. I can keep the first and second pages in the same section. And I put the third page in another section.

02. How to add the footer or the header on only one page in Pages?

The steps here are very similar to the above steps. The key solution is to separate that one page and put it in a section. Untick the Match previous section under the Headers & Footers for every section. Then you can add the footer or the header to that one page. You won’t see the footers and the headers on other pages.
