Disable Wix Blog Comments & The Warning Signs
How many comments did I get today? 64 spam comments. WTF!
Recently I get so many spam comments that I want to get rid of the comment section completely. Since my blog is on Wix. Disabling comments is quite easy. I write down the instructions below.
What is still bugging me is that some bloggers try to talk me out of it. They think the comment section is important. Should you and I ignore them?
1. How to disable commenting on Wix Blog
Since the comment section is a core function of Wix blog, you cannot delete or disable comments. But what you can do is to hide it. Make it disappear from all your blog posts.
Steps to disable comments in Wix blog
- Jump to Post page
- Select the Post area
- Click Settings button
- Click Display menu
- Click Recent Posts & Comments
- Switch off Show comments
2. Is it a good idea to turn off blog comments?
There are two sides to it. One side supports the comment section. The other side argues that the comment section brings more bad than good. Both sides have good reasons to support their conclusions. Let’s look at those reasons.
2.1. Too many spam comments
I can relate to this. When I first started blogging, 99% of the comments were spam. I spent too much time on reading and deleting those comments. If I had used that time to produce new content, I would have been more successful.
When your blog is young, and your fan base is quite small, you get too few comments to care about. Disabling comments makes sense at this phase.
2.2. Avoid hating comments
Another good reason to disable comments. Especially when your blog topic is very controversial, like debating if aliens exist.
Many people get mad because other people disagree with them. Once they are angry, they like to throw hating comments at your blog. Those comments potentially hurt your feelings. Turn off the comments if they bother you too much. Save your energy for content creating.
2.3. Provide social proof
Comments are not always bad. One big benefit of comments is that they give your blog some social proof.
When your readers see a bunch of people in the comment section, they immediately feel that this blog must be good to have that many people interested in it. Then your readers trust you more.
You instantly increase the trustworthiness of your blog by simply having a comment section.
2.4. Collect the readers’ feedbacks
Another benefit of comments is that they enable your readers to give you some feedback.
Without the comments, your readers cannot tell you which areas of your blog need improvement. Or you cannot collect new ideas from your readers for the future blog posts. Thus, potentially you miss out a lot of opportunities to improve your business.
Conclusion
It is very easy to disable comments in Wix blog. But is it bad to turn off the comments completely? There is no absolute answer to that. Bloggers will continue to debate.
From my personal experience, you don’t need the comment section at the early phase of your blog. First, because you will get too many spam comments. Second, you won’t have any time left for managing comments. Content creation will take all of your time.
Later on, when you have a fan base, you can enable the comment section.
But keep in mind that the comment section is a nice addition to your site. It is not as important as your content. As long as you can produce nice content, it is up to your personal preference to keep the comment or not.
